Joel A. Padilla

Immigration Attorney

Joel Padilla is an attorney with more than 20 years of legal experience, focused on federal immigration law since 2019. He has represented individuals, families, businesses, athletes, and organizations in complex legal matters.

An approach shaped by litigation

Before focusing on immigration, Joel practiced litigation at a New York firm, representing individuals and businesses in contested cases. That background still shapes how he works today: he examines the facts in depth, identifies problems early, and develops a clear strategy before moving forward.

Over the course of his practice, Joel has represented clients in family immigration, humanitarian immigration, removal proceedings, and employment-based immigration matters — including adjustment of status, waivers of inadmissibility, asylum, cancellation of removal, U visas, petitions under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and other forms of immigration relief.

He has represented people from across Latin America and other parts of the world, including cases with complicated immigration histories, prior immigration violations, criminal records, and other circumstances that require careful legal analysis.

Joel is especially drawn to cases where the answer isn’t immediately obvious. Whether it’s a waiver, a past immigration problem, a criminal record, or another complicating factor, his approach is to understand the whole story before recommending a path. Just as important, he believes the client should understand that strategy too, not simply sign the documents put in front of them.

Immigration for athletes and sports organizations

Joel has particular experience advising professional and amateur athletes, teams, federations, and other sports organizations on immigration matters. His work has included representing international athletes seeking to compete, train, or take part in sporting events in the United States, as well as advising organizations seeking to bring foreign athletes and professionals to the country.

His clients include a national soccer federation affiliated with FIFA. His work in sports requires analyzing where immigration law meets the athlete’s competitive standing, their compensation, the nature of the event or league, and the available immigration classifications.

Joel understands that sports immigration matters often run on a different calendar from traditional cases. Seasons start, tournaments have fixed dates, teams change, and opportunities can disappear quickly. His approach is to identify immigration issues early, evaluate realistic options, and give athletes and organizations clear guidance on the risks and requirements — before important commitments are made.

His broader experience in business and employment-based immigration also includes cases involving professional workers, employers, H-1B visas, and other employment-based permanent immigration classifications.

A personal approach to immigration law

Immigration cases are rarely just about forms. They can determine whether a family can live together, whether someone can pursue a professional opportunity, whether an athlete can compete, or whether a person can build the life they’ve worked for in the United States.

Joel cares deeply about his clients and the interests that bring them to his office. He believes a lawyer’s responsibility isn’t only to prepare documents, but to understand what the client is trying to achieve and help find the most sensible path to get there.

He also believes high-quality immigration representation should be as cost-effective as the circumstances allow. Not every case requires the same level of involvement or expense. When appropriate, Joel looks for practical, efficient ways to handle a case without unnecessary fees — while making sure the important legal issues get the attention they deserve.

Clients can expect direct advice — even when the answer isn’t the one they hoped to hear. Joel believes clients should understand both the strengths and the risks of their case, so they can make informed decisions about their family, their career, their business, and their future.

He is fully bilingual in English and Spanish, and has presented on immigration and nationality law to community groups, lawyers, and professional organizations in both languages.

Commitment to the community

Joel has devoted part of his career to pro bono service, including a trip to the southern border in Texas to work with the American Bar Association’s (ABA) ProBAR project, helping asylum seekers facing immigration proceedings without legal representation. During that experience he worked directly with people held at the Port Isabel Detention Center, seeing firsthand the challenges many migrants face in getting adequate legal representation.

That experience reinforced something that already guided his practice: access to qualified legal advice can help people understand their options and protect their interests.
